Facts
The 16,000 photos that were gathered for S/mileage’s major debut campaign were made into a photographic mosaic depicting an image of the group. This mosaic was then re-printed and put on display at Hello! Project stores and other locations in order for fans to be able to locate their own image on the collage.
The group, at the time still under an indies label, was given one month to gather the smiling photos of 10,000 people in order to earn their major debut. Submissions were accepted online, but the members also solicited the help of strangers by canvasing locations in person. On April 3rd, 2010 it was announced the group had gathered 16,000 photos, thus successfully completing the challenge.
Along with the announcement to add 3rd generation members to the group, it was decided that S/mileage would change their group name. Anyone could submit their suggestions online between October 4 and October 31, 2014.
S/mileage’s 2nd generation joined as sub-members. Tsunku challenged them to earn promotion as full members by working hard, and said full members could also be demoted if they weren’t careful. However in a video announcement on October 16, 2011, all of them (except Kosuga Fuyuka who had already resigned) were promoted to or remained as full members.
The announcement of Ogawa Saki‘s graduation from S/mileage and from Hello! Project came only three days in advance. Her last performance was at the release event for Uchouten LOVE on August 27, 2011, but she did not have a ceremony (presumably due to time constraints).
2nd generation member Fuyuka had to resign from the group for health reasons before she got a chance to be promoted to full membership. She recovered and joined the trainee group, HelloPro Kenshuusei, for a time.
On September 24, 2014, Wada Ayaka and Fukuda Kanon revealed that, in order to secure the group’s future, they requested the addition of new members (3rd generation) to S/mileage. They received support from the company, and it was decided the new members were to be selected from HelloPro Kenshuusei.
The 3rd generation members were revealed on October 4, 2014 at a press conference before the day’s performance of SMILE FANTASY! (S/mileage’s ongoing musical at the time). They were Murota Mizuki, Aikawa Maho, and Sasaki Rikako—all from HelloPro Kenshuusei.
On December 17, 2014, the new group name was revealed to be ANGERME (アンジュルム), a portmanteau of the French words ange (angel) and larme (tears). The name was Nakanishi Kana‘s suggestion.
